Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing youth sports in the U.S. and offers kids a fun, fast-paced, and welcoming team environment. This page is designed to help parents understand the basics when their child is trying lacrosse for the first time—what the sport is, what’s needed to get started, and what to expect during the season.

What Is Lacrosse?

Lacrosse is a field sport played with a stick (often called a crosse) and a ball, combining skills from soccer, basketball, and hockey. Speed, teamwork, and hand‑eye coordination are key components of the game. There are boys’ and girls’ versions of the sport with different equipment and rules, especially around contact and checking .

Who Can Play?
